Amidst the tourists...

View all 6 photos...
Argentina finally granted me a sunny Sunday! So off I went to the market at Plaza Dorrego in the San Telmo neighborhood. I heard English everywhere, and other languages dispersed throughout. This was by far the most touristy experience I've had so far in Buenos Aires, and I must admit it was a little difficult to adapt at first...I just have not beee thinking in the touristy way the past few weeks!!!

But the market satisfied any need for being touristy. I did not buy anything; however, I contributed 75 centavos or so to the local Charlie Chaplin wannabe---he was hilarious as I watched him while waiting for my friend Rob to meet me. So I had to give him something. He started blowing me kisses, I guess, as I turned my back to walk away, and ladies were screaming at me in Spanish, "Te llama!! Te llama!!" (He's calling you!) So I turned around and he was running towards me, but then he ran past me and hugged Rob! The whole crowd was cracking up. Hahaha. So that is what Plaza Dorrego is like; a place to throw away a little money here and there and get some lighthearted entertainment. I watched some of the free tango show in the plaza, and introduced myself to some other English speakers, who were from various locations ranging from Australia to Sweden.

Here are some photos taken from a balcony where we had a little snack and a beer, removed a little from the Sunday afternoon madness below….

What do you do after work on a Wednesday?

If you're an "older" person in the Belgrano neighborhood of Buenos Aires, your answer may very well be: TANGO! Check out these photos....from Barrancas de Belgrano, a little plaza I came across by chance last Wednesday around 7 P.M. This was no tango show; this was not meant for tourists. This was just a bunch of people enjoying themselves on the way home from work (notice their shopping bags and purses in the middle of the gazebo platform).

One guy who saw us taking pictures stopped and said, "Hay que bailar!" (You have to dance!) and if I had had more time, I would have stepped up to the challenge and asked one of these experts to teach me....Next time!

Here is a set of pictures from my first week in Buenos Aires. I haven't seen everything yet, so these are limited in scope! But the character of the city will hopefully come through a little....via the colors, the contrasting building styles, the vegetation, the people....the life of BA!!!!

These pictures come from various neighborhoods of BsAs, including downtown, Palermo, and Puerto Madero. The series starts with photos of Plaza del Congreso (in the city center, where my Spanish class was during the first week), followed by Plaza Aleman and the Japanese Gardens in Palermo, and finally Puerto Madero (the port converted into a new neighborhood)....
